Produced by Knoll since 1948, the Womb chair has become an iconic example of modern furniture design. The Relax version offers an additional air of comfort, with seat and back cushions softening the strong, sculptural form.

The design, commissioned by Florence Knoll, allowed Eero Saarinen to continue exploring the possibilities of a chair that achieved comfort through the shape of its shell, rather than the depth of cushioning - a concept he had worked on previously with Charles Eames. The resulting ergonomic chair envelopes the user, hence its unusual name.
The Relax and the Classic versions of the Womb chair are equal in appearance and dimensions. Made in the US, the Classic Womb chair is constructed from a fibreglass shell, which is then carefully hand-upholstered, making allowances for slight variations in dimensions. The Relax Womb chair is produced in Italy, and features a slightly smaller shell which is upholstered and finished with a fabric or leather cover.
The Knoll logo is stamped into the structure of the chair.
